The Most Beautiful U.S. Coin in History
Both sides of the gold coin were designed by sculptor Augustus St. Gaudens, so the coin was named after him.
The outbreak of World War I caused the production of the Double Eagle gold coin to cease for several years, and the vast majority of gold coins produced after resuming production were used for international trade until production ceased in 1933.
The obverse of the gold coin shows the goddess holding a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other, with the rays of the sun and the U.S. Capitol behind her.
From 1908 to 1911, the gold coins were surrounded by 46 stars, representing the 46 U.S. states at the time.
In 1912, after the states of Arizona and New Mexico joined the Union, the number of stars around the gold coin increased from 46 to 48, representing the increase in the number of U.S. states to 48.
Starting in 1909 the words “ IN GOD WE TRUST” were added to the gold coins, meaning “We believe in God”.
